Deconstructing Identity, Building Community Through Food Activism in Italy Italian cuisine conjures up images of family bonds and tasty food, but how much of that is true? In the age of mass-production and globalization, how has Italian cuisine redefined itself? This webinar will focus on the social aspects of food, both material and symbolic, on social awareness and the connection between food, fairness and safety. Participants in this webinar will learn about the start of critical consumption and sustainable food movements in Italy, the creation of spaces where healthy and respectful practices of food production are enacted, the contemporary nostalgic return to lost traditional recipes, the rediscovery of local products connected to a specific terroir (land) and, finally, the creation of an idea of “authenticity” and “tradition” developed through marketing campaigns and quality brands. The webinar will also examine how food and taste have developed through time and have become a national identity marker. Registration deadline: March 7.
