How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

The supportive environment made me feel embraced and welcomed. After trying courses from different departments and different selections from the Department of Computer Science, I was able to find my interest for the future, and Dickinson's education gave me the strength to pursue my dream.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I hope my grad school environment will be welcoming, and I hope I will find a path for both career and life.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

I sprained my ankle the first day in college, and I had to use crutch. At that time, I did not know anyone in Dickinson, but whenever I was in front of a door, someone would open the door for me, and all those little moments truly let me know that I was not on my own at the hardest time.

Is there any other information you would like us to know?

Just thank you!! Thank you for the great education and inclusive environment Dickinson provides. I felt safe to discover who I was, what I wanted and also who I wanted to be in Dickinson College. I had growth not only academically but also as an open-minded person. The time I had at Dickinson will forever be one of my sweetest memories and give me power to keep going at the most hopeless time.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

The Dickinson liberal-arts education has allowed me to express myself completely and discover what I like and what I want to do. It also provided me with the necessary mentorship to be a better person.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I want to make a difference in any way possible, and that is what I am most excited about.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

The most defining moments of my Dickinson experience are the ones that I spent getting know people that are different than me and building connections with them.

Internship Experience

I worked as a technical support staff at JHU CTY on Dickinson’s campus during the summer of 2019. I was responsible for handling the IT duties for this summer school.

  • Ability to be a direct customer liaison, providing front-line support for customer challenges and system support and troubleshooting, understanding of customer problems and potential resolutions. As we grow, partnering with Customer Success Managers.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

Working with a dedicated team, pursuing difficult work and learning every day.

Internship Experience

I'm currently interning with Grey Market Labs during a preliminary period before I start my job. My role is a software engineer intern, and I work on various projects that fall under the Opaque platform. All work is remote, so I collaborate with team members over Teams.

Job Responsibilities

Knowledge management. Working closely with databases, taxonomies and ontologies within contracted companies to organize information and create more efficient databases. Other software development/website development work as applicable between client interaction.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson strengthened my problem-solving skills and gave me a unique perspective on the world and issues I will come across. The classes I have taken have helped me become an independent learner yet also a great team player. Dickinson helped me discover what I am passionate about and what I could see myself doing for the rest of my life.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I'm really excited to be working in larger software systems (than we work with in class) and directly be impacting clients and users with the code that I am developing.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Being on the Dickinson swim team because I met some of the most hardworking, kind and incredible friends ever. Also studying abroad in Germany because I was exposed to so many new and exciting experiences (and also because I met some really great friends!).

Internship Experience

I interned for two summers with my now employer, Enterprise Knowledge, LLC, in Arlington, Virginia. I worked on several projects varying from developing a website to implementing features on a recommendation system for a client. I also externed in Bethesda, Maryland, at Employee Navigator, LLC, during my sophomore year at Dickinson. During this externship, I was exposed to the design and creation of HR software products.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has taught me how to balance a literary perspective with a STEM perspective while addressing or analyzing any problem. Dickinson also helped me with my social skills by interacting with more people.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

Learning new skills, making an impact at my job and research and meeting new people.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Meeting new friends, taking interdisciplinary courses, attending MOB events, working as a TA/help-room tutor, studying in the library with friends.

Is there any other information you would like us to know?

After graduation, I will work as a software engineer for a year, then pursue my master's degree at Carnegie Mellon University for Fall 2022.

Internship Experience

I worked as a robotics research intern at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I built a multi-agent game simulator that leverages an actor-critic algorithm that improved the accuracy of the robot by approximately 20%, conducted human-robot interaction research at the University's Robotics Institute that focuses on multiple agents using reinforcement learning and helped with the University's journal design.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has taught me how to apply information to various fields, and thus I will be able to apply my computer science and quantitative economics background even within the medical industry. Dickinson has also given me confidence in leading others and engaging in tasks with others in meaningful ways. Furthermore, I now have a strong perspective on the importance of meaningful relationships and time management in accomplishing tasks and working with groups.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am anticipating spending long hours and a lot of effort in pursuing medical school. I am looking to attend medical school shortly after completing my post-bac program and am still rather open minded about which profession within the industry I want to do though I am interested in surgery.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

  • Being a member and captain of the Dickinson women's soccer team was extremely impactful to me because it taught me how to foster meaningful relationships and apply work ethic in healthy ways to all aspects of life.
  • Founding and serving as president of the Women in Economics Club was really fun and also taught me a lot about what it means to be a leader and mentor to those around me. I felt that my efforts could positively impact the students who come after me, and therefore I felt a lot of fulfillment in trying to ensure that the next generation of students will have the positive experience that I did.
  • Participating in events, like cohosting in a Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues event taught me information about myself that has continued to impact my perceptions and career path.
  • I was interested in data science before coming to Dickinson and therefore was very excited to be a contributing member of the Data Science Initiative that resulted in the establishment of a Data Science Major this year! 
  • I participated twice in the Innovation Competition @ Dickinson which was profoundly helpful in learning to communicate and determine efficacy of ideas. It also opened the door for me to meet many alumnus, including Zach Wahl '98 who I ended up interning for two summers and who supported me and taught me many lessons about both life and career paths.

Volunteer or Service Organization

University of Maryland Medical Center: volunteer in the Shock Trauma Operating Room.

Internship Experience

I interned for two summers at Enterprise Knowledge located in Arlington, Virginia. I worked as a technical intern and helped the company to develop their intranet, conduct client-facing code reviews and help build out taxonomies for clients for information management.
